Change of the Premium from $2000 to $100,000
The biggest news is the change of the starting premium from $2,000 to $100,000. The rationale was that expired ENS names were bought and then immediately flipped for a higher value. For example, the most valuable of these, punk.eth, expired and purchased for $2,000 was then re-sold on Opensea for $85,636 (42x return immediately)
Even after the change to $100,000 premium, this valuable 3 letter ENS name (bbc.eth) was still bought at a premium of 38.7 ETH ($101k)
Here is the thread discussing the increase and the ENS DAO approving and executing the change in about just 2 weeks.
Research of current trends shows:
- 2,798 names have been bought during the temporary premium period so far.
- Of these, 340 (12%) were purchased the moment they became available.
- Registrations of names during the temporary premium period have been on the increase since the DAO launched in November.
- 12 names have been purchased at a premium and flipped on OpenSea; the most valuable of these, punk.eth, went for $85,636.
Recently Expired ENS names in January 2022 that are in premium period
Of note would be this BNB.eth that has expired. It is a short 3 character name and highly also crypto elated. BNB is Binance coin which is the number 4 coin by market cap behind Bitcoin, Etherum and Tether.
There were also some crypto related names that were instantly snapped up or renewed within the 90 day grace period. For example (hodl.eth and nft.eth)
One that is still not renewed and could enter premium period later is fomo.eth: Expired. Grace period ends 2022.04.25 at 02:54 (UTC+08:00)
There were ~2150 number of expired domains in the month of January 2022.
Here are the list of valuable ENS names. I didn’t consider double words i.e cryptobank, single word but with a ’s’ at the back indicating plurality. i.e buildings instead of building.
